We do clever things for interesting people
Twenty years shipping products, from the Skoog, a soft-touch instrument for disabled musicians retailed by Apple, to interactive installations at LEGOLAND® Discovery Centres and the Science Museum. We hold several patents. We’re a small team in Edinburgh, and we’ve learned a lot along the way.
People we’ve built things for
-
They bring a unique mix of technical know-how and practical, entrepreneurial insight, which means they understand not only how to build a product but also how to get it to market. Whenever we hit a snag, their pragmatic approach meant things kept moving forward.
Rebecca LundgrenCo-founder, Voxblock -
We definitely picked the right partners when we chose to work with Playable Technology to take our product from prototype to market ready. Their experience in the space was, and still is, invaluable in helping us avoid potential pitfalls and get to market quickly with a robust product.
Simon TewFounder, Digit Music -
We've had the pleasure of working with Playable for over two years on a mix of challenging hardware, firmware and software projects, including iOS and Android applications and PCB design. They consistently bring innovative ideas to the table, deliver top-notch solutions, and show great flexibility and adaptability.

What we do
Product development
The whole development lifecycle: feasibility, technical review, go-to-market strategy, cost-down analysis, prototyping, component selection, sourcing, compliance, manufacturer liaison, launch and ongoing support.
Software & apps
iOS is our long-term love, for hardware, audio and ML capabilities that ship as standard. Android and macOS too. Swift, C, C++, Java, Kotlin, UI/UX, connected devices, Bluetooth, accessibility (VoiceOver, Switch Control), audio DSP, computer vision, ML.
Cloud & backend
Backends for connected products: APIs, authentication, databases, real-time sync, storage, push notifications, scheduled jobs and analytics. We build day to day on Firebase and Google Cloud, and work with AWS.
Electronics & firmware
In-house from breadboard to production-ready manufacturing pack. Usually around the ESP family, custom wireless and Bluetooth, multichannel ADC, on-board audio, signal processing, USB, Serial/I²C/SPI, power and battery management, updatable firmware.
Music & audio technology
Nearly twenty years in retail and educational music technology, with academic backgrounds in musical acoustics, music technology, psychology and the sonic arts. Bespoke instruments, installations, MIDI over BLE/USB/MPE, custom sound engines, samplers, sequencers, high-performance multi-threaded audio DSP for embedded devices.
AI & machine learning
Computer vision and ML for experiences that bridge physical and digital. Backgrounds from the Sonic Arts Research Centre at Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Edinburgh’s School of Physics & Astronomy. Custom tooling for training and deploying models.
Accessible, inclusive, universal
Accessibility, from the start
Accessibility should be part of product design, not an afterthought bolted on before launch. We build for compatibility with assistive technologies including VoiceOver and Switch Control, and we’ve been doing it since long before it was a procurement requirement.
Our own products are the evidence: Skoog, an instrument designed for people conventional ones exclude. BrailleBlocks, our Braille-literacy project for children with vision impairment. Installations that blind and sighted, seated and standing, verbal and non-verbal visitors can play together.
